Just re-putting the Prologue down since I'm bored. Please (re)submit characters, guys. Anywho, on with it... ============================================== The poster seemed to stand out from the rest. "Experienced duelists requested for participation in a new study.” No other info was given, other than the time and place. Zackarias looked at the poster, considering participating. He was one of the few duelists in his town, and he thought that he was quite skilled. About ten years ago, someone like him would possibly been part of a Duelist Academy. But, as time went on, more and more duelists started quitting, some because they were so bad, others because they kept winning, and some even just because they got bored of it. And, because of that, new games were made, the Academies were shut down, and even both Kaiba Corp and Industrial Illusions had forgotton about it sooner or later. It was knowing this which made the poster interesting. Someone, and likely someone of influence, had shown an interest in Duel Monsters. Zack began to feel excited. He immediately decided to join, pulled a notebook out of his backpack, and jotted down the address and time. Just then, the class bell rang, he quickly put his notebook away and started running to his class. ============================================== And a gigantic thanks goes to Ryo for the title idea! Welp, I'll be waiting for more character stuffs. ============================================== And now for character info. As he is a celebrity among the Americans, this Japanese-American brings along his Crimson Electric Guitar "the Crimson Noise" and maybe a small amp to go with it. Personality: Hes a very quiet guy and talks as little as possible. He usually likes to hide himself away from others... for he doesn't like filling out too many autographs. But if you do find him, he'll do his best to please everyone around him. He is skilled in the art of sketching anime, and coming up with the best metal/rock/alternative rock music you can ever dream of.... Aside from dueling of course. Then there are other things about Xing, the darker side of him... First of all, he drinks, and hes a year below the drinking age. Though, he was caught by the cops once but they just wanted his autograph. Noone reports him anyway. Second of all, he once tried committing suicide, but he was found in the nick of time before he was lost forever from slitting his wrists. The most disturbing, is that he has an inner demon. His few, close friends know about this from Xing's dead father, but Xing himself is unaware. A few things can trigger Xing to go into a violent blind rage, and a few features will be noticable: Longer canine-teeth, and red irises in his eyes. The ring he wears stops the demon from going full force, as he was told to never take it off... under any circumstances. Luckily, it is made of a rare metal undetectible my any metal detectors. Deck: Xing's deck is all about using the DarkWorld Cards and Archfiends. Duel Disk: A black and gold duel disk designed to match the golden skulls on his clothing. The jaw of this diabolical looking skull with horns opens up sideways to reveal the 5 card placeholders. Character Owner: Zane - Name: Warren McArthur Appearance: Warren is 19 and stands at 5'11, with an athletic, tone build, with a deep tan. He has short, light brown hair, that often sticks up in odd ways (think bed head). He often wears a white button-up shirt with a brown button up vest over it. He wears brown slacks and black shoes. His face has strong, sharp features, yet his eyes show kindness beneath their intensity. Personality: Warren is a strong, boisterous young man that loves a conversation. He talks about anything of interest, but mostly likes to listen to others. To his enemies, he's confident, somewhat cocky, and determined to fight to the last. This applies to his duels as well, but also knows to keep it friendly. Duel Disk: Academy Disk Deck: KILL IT WITH FIRE! Character Owner: Wise_Idiot - Name: Dante Infernias Appearance: Being just short of fifteen years of age, Dante stands at a height of five feet and five inches. A skinny appearance, his grey-blue eyes have a tendency to be shielded from everyone’s sight by long bangs covering the upper part of his face with his rusty brown hair. He usually goes around clothed in wide clothing: baggy pants, a short-sleeved shirt, and a vest with a hoodie. The color scheme is usually simple, greens, blacks and blues, although his shirt is usually a white one, covered in skull patterns. He says it’s his lucky shirt. Personality: A bit of a shy guy, Dante gets fired up easily when doing what he likes, losing eye for all else around him unless someone calls out his name loudly, whether he is watching a movie, reading, or dueling. He often taunts his opponent right before making a move he believes will turn the battle in his favour, or make it even more in his favour. Deck: Dante has based his deck around cards that make it so that the opponent’s hand gets as empty as possible and his own hand is nearly always at least five cards full, allowing him to choose from a wide range of options whilst keeping his opponent’s options limited. Duel Disk: His very own, it is modeled to look like it is made out of chiseled stone. Character Owner: Morph

And now I'm doing the next part thanks to boredom again. Woo! ============================================== The day had finally come. Zackarias looked through his deck again, making sure that all of his cards were there. He was very proud of his deck, especially since it had held its own against many stronger opponents. Zack put the deck in his backpack with the rest of his collection. After a quick breakfast, he ran out his door towards the lab. The boy arrived about ten to fifteen minutes early, and was directed to the lounge. There were already a few people there, and he sat down to wait. After asking the others what exactly this place was testing, one other person stated that they believed it to be a new dueling system. A few minutes later, more Duelists came in, and a man who looked to be in his twenties sat down next to him. "Hey, are you a Duelist too?", Zack asked to the boy. The man looked at Zackarias blankly, then replied, "No, I’m just here for the free food." Seeing the young Duelist's' confused look, the man sighed, “Yes, I’m a duelist too. Isn’t everyone in here?” "Oh… yeah!", Zack laughed. "Guess I’m just a lil excited. I read on a poster that they’re going to be testing some sort of new dueling system or something, and since I love Dueling and all, I had to come! My name's Zackarias. What’s yours?" "Luke.", the man replied. "Luke fon Fabre?", Zack teased, despite having just met this man. "Don't, call me that.", Luke responded, somewhat threateningly. "Anyway, a new dueling system?" "Well, I dunno any specifics. I dunno if it’s a new apparatus, or new rules, or new cards, or anything else. But I think it might revolutionize dueling! I can’t wait!" Luke thought about it. Well, the game definitely needed a new hook. It wasn’t as popular as it used to be, and anything that brought in new players to compete against was alright in his book. It was then Luke realized that Zack was somehow still talking. "My deck's based on the XYZ cards! I dunno why, but I sort of feel a connection with the cards I use. How do you design your deck?" "I use a Rock theme." Luke said. “Well except for this one." Luke then pulled out a Fairy type card that Zackarias hadn't ever seen before. Weird lookin' thing, it was. It was then that a door opened. The thought on almost every Duelist in the rooms mind was, "Finally". A professor entered the room and began to speak. "Hello everyone. My name is Professor Winter, and I’d like to welcome you all to my facility. I trust you all know the reason we are here. If not, let me explain. My colleagues and I have been doing some research on Duel Monsters technology. We have found a new way of Dueling involving special atmospheric projectors. The experience is enhanced almost to the point of reality. I’ve done some preliminary studies, but the technology's' true potential has yet to be tested. I would like two volunteers to participate in a Duel." Naturally, Zackarias’s' hand shot up first. "I’m ready! Pick me! I’m a great Duelist!" "Alright, we’ll take you, and, just for simplicity's' sake, the man next to you," the professor gave with a blank expression. Luke looked up, realized what the professor said, and quickly checked the other side of Zack. There was no one there. "Why do I have to get stuck with this nitwit?", he thought. "You two, follow me," said Professor Winter. "My assistant, Professor Kai, will lead the rest of you to the viewing area. You won’t want to miss this," he finished with the same expression as before. He turned to leave, and Luke and Zackarias quickly followed him. As they walked down the hall, Professor Winter began explaining the game to the two Duelists. "The layout and turn structure are the same as you remember: maximum hand size of six cards, no more than five monsters, and all that. Playing cards is also the same: one monster per turn, traps can’t be activated right away, and so on. The core of the game is the same." "So it’s simply a cosmetic change?", asked Luke. "Well, the appearance is drastically improved, yes. But there’s more to it than that. You know the text on the cards? All of the abilities? Forget most of them." "Forget them?" Zack asked, confused. "But if you take away the special abilities, there’s nothing left! Whoever has the strongest monsters wins!" "Not so," the professor replied, with one of his characteristic straight faces. "I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but according to various sources, Duel Monsters has its roots in ancient Egypt. These monsters were once real, summoned by sorcerers to battle each other. So apparently, the creator of Duel Monsters wanted to give the players some sense of what this was like, so he simplified the monsters's' special powers and incorporated them into the game. Many of the cards, like Burst Stream of Destruction or Release Restraint, were apparently already the abilities of their corresponding monsters. Or, for another example, consider Skelengel. Its game text allows the player to draw a card, but in Egypt, there were no cards to draw. It’s very likely that the real Skelengel gave the user some sort of advantage, but what it was is unknown. However, we may have found a way to restore the game to what it was. Personaly, I think this whole ancient monsters and magic deal is just some legend, but that's what we're here to see." "Real monsters? Not likely," said Luke, "And now a game without rules? What kind of game would it be? I can hardly believe that someone would consider such a stupid thing if you ask me." Luke exclaimed. "I think you’ll be glad you came." replied the professor. "Here we are at the Dueling Arena." The three were now in a wide-open room with holographic projectors circling it, and a large Duel Stadium, much like the one Pegasus had in his castle, sitting in the middle. "As I said, you’ll find the layout to be familiar. Take your positions, and let me know when you are ready. I’ll start up the projectors and say one or two more things, then you’re on your own." "Here we go!" exclaimed Zackarias, bouncing up and down. "This'll be great!" Luke growled a bit, "Alright, we might as well begin." He clenched his teeth as he shuffled his deck and walked towards his end of the Arena. ============================================== Luke is the character of a friend of mine, sweetnsourchan.

And for those who haven't figured it out, Professor Winter is Ryo. ============================================== The lights went out, and several gold spheres in the corners of the room began to glow. Suddenly, the darkness of the room was replaced with a sort of hazy gray. "It’s ready." came the professor's' voice. "Since this is still in the experimental stages, we’ll go easy the first time. I’ll start you both off with 2000 life points, but I don’t want either of you to make a direct attack on each other, that includes magic and traps. Stick with monster combat for now. Also, try different commands with your monsters. Trust your intuition to determine the card effects. Ready? If not then too bad. Duel." "This is gonna be tricky.", thought Luke. "I’m a practical duelist, not a theoretical one! I learn the rules and I use them. And now I have to make up the rules? Well, here goes nothing I guess." Luke drew six cards and looked over his hand. "I’ll summon Mormolith!!," he called, placing the card down. There was a hissing sound from behind him as his monster stepped out from the haze and onto the field. Startled, Luke looked up from where the monster had emerged. Well, new cinematics were always welcome, he thought. “I’ll finish my turn by playing one card face down.” "Sorry, Fabre, but your monster is too weak for my Shining Angel!” cried Zackarias, as he placed the card down. And sure enough, the monster descended down like a true Angel. "I'll attack your weirdo lizard!!" "Hmm, if what he said about new rules is true..." thought Luke. "I activate my Dark Bribe trap card!" Immediately, the Angel stopped infront of the reptile-like rock creature, and it looked as though the two began talking. "What the...", Zack let out, eyeing the monsters. And almost as if on cue, the Shining Angel turned dark, and then dissapeared as if going straight to the afterlife. As a odd result, a card shot off the top of Zackarias's' deck and into his hand. "Hey! That's not what the card does! Pro-fessorrr! What's going on!?", the boy whined. "Luke called for a Dark Bribe,” the professor stated simply. "The oh-so pure Angel took it." Luke blinked, he couldn't believe that actually worked. "Wow!" said Zack. "This game is fantastic! Now I wanna try something!" He then placed a card face-down. "Your move!" "You pretty much just told me that you played a trap.", Luke thought. "You shouldn’t have said that," he told his opponent. "But, since I can't attack you, you’re off the hook. I’ll end my turn." "Ah who cares!", said Zack as he drew. "And speaking of trying things... Come on out, Reflect Bounder!" And just as the rest, the machine with the mirrors forms out of the darkness. "Now I activate the spell Frontline Base!" The ground then began to rumble, and out of it emerged pieces of a giant fortress, two grand walls being on the left and right edges of the arena. Not only that, but the Reflect Bounder then gained 200 attack and defense points, rising to 1900 ATK and 1200 DEF. "Woo! I was right! It is a Field card now!", Zack gave with excitement. Luke was impressed, seemed the kid caught on fast to this kind of thing. "Bounder, attack!", cried Zack. And sure enough, Luke's' creature was blasted apart by a beam of light, making his life points go down to 1100. Luke knew that he would have to think on his feet to win this one. Nearly all of the effects he had learned had been totally re-vamped. The next draw could hold any number of outcomes, and none of them were ones he would have prepared for. ============================================== Boredom struck early tonight.

Way to recycle your text there DS. xD Hope at least there will be new stuff otherwise these Duels and the story will be a tad boring. D:
I like that you now add links to pictures of the cards though, really nice. Especially considering I don't know most of the ones that came out after GX started up and a lot from before that neither.

It's only recycled for the first part, really. Since the beginning was the part I was most happy with. So yeah, expect different stuff to happen pretty soon.
Oh and just so ya know, I won't be using Tuner or Synchro monsters, or any of the popular 5Ds cards, really. Since this story is in a different timeline than it is.

"Welp, your turn!", came Zackarias's' voice. Luke then drew his next card. He needed to think up a plan if he was gonna stand any chance in this. After staring at his hand a bit, an idea struck! If what he had in mind happened, it'd be perfect. "I'll start by summoning Thunder King Rai-Oh in attack mode!" And in a flash of lightning, a creature that looked like a glorified lightning rod was on the field. "And now I'll get rid of your support!", he declared, placing down a magic card. " Giant Trunade!" And just like that, the air in the room began to shift. Booms of thunder could be heard. Sure enough, fierce winds began blowing. The two Duelists could hardly believe that their hair and clothes were actually being blown around. Soon, the two walls of the Frontline Base crumbled, and the image of the face-down Zack had laid was struck by a lightning bolt. The Reflect Bounder was not exempt either. As the hurricane passed, the machine's' mirrors had broken from debris, and its attack power lowered to a pitiful 800. The Thunder King, however, looked better than it ever had. Surging with electricity, its power had grown to a fierce 2400! Zack face grew wide, that was really clever. And so Luke's' voice broke in. "Rai-Oh! Destroy his Reflect Bounder!" Rai-oh obeyed, calling down a spiraling bolt of lightning straight down on his foe. Zackarias covered his face as his life points decreased to measly 400. "I'll end my turn with a face-down.", Luke him self was even surprised at his planning, but did his best not to show it. "Oh man...", the boy let out. "Hmph. You are in a bit of a rough spot aren't you?", Luke replied. "This. Is. AWESOME!" "Huh?" "The way you pulled that off was just so wonderful! Full of style, yet fierce at the same time! This is turning out to be a great Duel!" Luke simply sighed, "Just go, kid." Zack drew a with a wide smile on his face. He needed to take out that Thunder monster. And with 2400 attack, that wasn't gonna be easy. Least not with the cards he had right now. So, time for some new ones. "I'll start by playing Pot of Greed!" A poofing sound was then heard, and the young Duelist's' eyes scanned the field for the Pot... it was nowhere to be found. Then the intercom turned on. "It formed around your deck, you blind fool.", came Professor Winter's' voice. Zackarias glanced to his side. Hey, the Prof was right. "Thanks Doc!", he exclaimed, giving a thumbs up to the viewing area. The Pot then spat out 2 cards, and Zack added them to his hand. Ah! Much better. "I activate Monster Reborn!" "No you don't!", Luke broke in, taking Zack off guard. Judging by what Pot of Greed did, regular effects actually were still effective, or atleast he hoped in this case they would be. "I use Thunder King Rai-Oh's' ability, sacrificing itself to stop your special summoning!" And just like that, the monster exploded, taking the spell card with it. Well, shoot. That put a small hamper in Zack's' plans. "Bah. Then I'll just set a monster and place a face-down." "Not gonna let your monster in either! I flip my trap, Compulsary Evacuation Device!" And like that, the face-down defense monster Zack had laid was launched back into his hand. "Aww man.", the boy whined with disappointment. "Just go." Luke gave a smirk. He was actually making a great comeback. Luke drew, and his expression changed when he did. It was his exception card, the Attack Melter Fairy, his special card. He couldn't help but stand and stare for a bit before being brought back by his opponent's' words. "You alive in there dude?" Luke quickly snapped out of it. "Oh, uh, yeah." "I'll start by activating Mystical Space Typhoon to get rid of your last card on the field!" And sure enough, a cyclone descended down on the field, taking away Zack's' face-down. "Now I'll summon the Different Dimension Assailant!" The warrior appeared quickly, almost as though he was there the whole time. "And I'll end with a face-down." "Gah...", Zack let out as he drew. How'd he get on the losing side all of a sudden? Oh well. He might be able to pull off a new plan with the cards he had, though it seemed a tad risky. Meanwhile, the Duelists in the viewing area were on the edge of their seats. Well, except the Professor. The happening Duel being so intense, anything being able to happen. Quite a marvel to the bunch of them. "And here I thought I thought all Duelists were obsessed...", Winter whispered to himself sarcastically.

Zackarias's' mind was spinning. Luke had alot more life points than he did, and the cards he tried putting up for a plan ended up getting blow away. Almost literally. He'd just have to see if he could form a new one. Zack drew a card and put it into his hand. Hey, this could help a bit. "I activate the magic card, Raigeki!" Placing the card down, a giant bolt of lightning soon came down on the D.D. Warrior. The smoke cleared, and the monster seemed to be just fine. Luke couldn't help but smirk at this. "Looks like my Warrior's not affected by a small bit of... lightning?" His talk was slowed in that a portal ripped up behind his Warrior, soon sucking him in and removing the monster from play. "Seems the Different Dimension doesn't take kindly to failure.", Professor Winter commented to himself, then jotting down a small note in a notebook he seemed to pull from nowhere. Zackarias smiled. "Now I'll just reset my monster, and place a face-down." The two images of the cards materialized, and the boy ended his turn. Luke frowned and drew his next card. The great advantage he had... gone. Well except for his face-down, but his opponent had done nothing to trigger it, so that was no use. And just great, the only monster in his hand was his special card, the Attack Melter Fairy. He didn't wanna have to use it, especially with these new rules; No telling what could happen. But it seemed he had no choice. "I'll place another face-down. Then I'll summon my Attack Melter Fairy in attack mode!" The Fairy floated down above the field with grace, gently rubbing Luke's' cheek before going down onto the field itself. ...That was weird. That touch almost seemed real. Luke simply shrugged it off, though. "Now my Attack Melter, attack his face-down monster!" Zackarias smirked as the Fairy was quick to destroy his creature. "Thanks!" "Huh?", Luke was obviously confused. "You destroyed my Witch of the Black Forest! Now I can finally...", Zack reached for his Deck, only to be taken off guard. A small field of light was blocking his Deck! "Hey! What gives!?" the younger Duelist pounded on the field a couple times, but to no avail. The Fairy spun a little and sent Luke a wink. "Heh. Seems my partner here doesn't like the Witch of the Black Forest very much." And in correspondence, the Fairy stuck her tongue out playfully. "Gah, I end my turn.", there was nothing Zack could do. Luke drew his next card. Nothing useful. "I'll switch my Fairy to defense mode and end my turn." Zack drew. Perfect. Now to draw Luke out. "I summon Sangan in attack mode!" Now all he needed to do was have Luke take the bait... "Good to see you've given up. Time to end this!", Luke declared, flipping one of his face-downs. "I activate Burden of the Mighty!" And just like that, Zackarias's' life points went down to 100. Didn't stop the boy's' confident look though. "Now, Attack Melter, finish this Duel!" The monster obeyed, generating a ball of light and then launching it at Sangan. "Ha!", Zackarias declared. "I activate the Holy Barrier, Mirror Force!" Luke's' eyes widened. A force field generated over Sangan, blocking his monster's' attack, then reflecting it back as multiple orbs of light. Wait, maybe... "You're not the only one with one of those! Mirror Force!" And sure enough, the Fairy put a shield up around herself, deflecting the oncoming attack right back. Zack couldn’t believe it. He had lost. He stared at his decreasing life point counter. Suddenly, just as it hit zero, he felt a sharp pain, as though someone was driving an icy knife into him. However, the pain stopped after a minute or two, and the lights went on and the haze lifted. "What’s the matter?", called Luke. "Losing wasn't that hard on you, was it?" Zackarias looked up, shaking his head. "It... it was nothing. Don’t worry about it." As they stepped off the platform, he added, "Nice Duel man. You did awesome!" “So did you,”, Luke replied, giving a small thumbs up. “I guess it’s tricky playing with unwritten rules. But don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll both catch on really soon." "Psh.", the boy then let out. "If I had drawn any of my XYZ cards, you wouldn'ta lasted."

Hurray for explanations!
==============================================
Professor Winter had already made onto the arena floor, ready to quickly lead the two Duelists back to the viewing area. "Seems someone wants to outclass me as the jerk around here", he thought, reffering to Luke. The three began to walk the empty hallways, and just for the sake of breaking the silence, Winter let out, "That was... how would you youngsters today put it, far out?" The professor then looked down toward his notebook and continued speaking to the two.
"What happened at the end there? Did you get hurt?"
Zackarias quit snickering in time to figure out that the doc was talking to him. "Oh uh, I'm fine, don't worry 'bout me."
"Believe me, I'd love to.", said the professor. "But sadly it's part of my job. And if the system is hurting Duelists, I need to know so that the team may work on ways to prevent it."
"Just what is your system, anyway?", asked Luke, "How does it work?"
"It runs on your thoughts and dreams.", replied Winter, rolling his eyes, then letting out a sigh. "But the truth is, I don't actually know -exactly- how it works. No one does. Let's head back to the viewing area and I'll explain what we do know."
When Luke and Zackarias reached the viewing area, they were surrounded by the other excited duelists.
"Awesome duel!" "Nice move at the end there!" "That was incredible!" "Great combos, Luke!"
When the praise died down, Luke and Zack took their seats.
The professor walked to the front of the room and addressed the Duelists. "Good day, everyone. You've just seen the amazing effects of our new Dueling technology. Now I'd like to tell you the background of it."
"The golden spheres that you see are the key to all of this. They were found in the basement of a temple, and were given to us for study. The only distinguishing markings these spheres had were the eye-like symbols on them."
"We tried to take them apart, but to no avail. A chemical test showed that they are made of gold, which is even more confusing, since gold is a soft metal."
"We then decided to take other tests on them. The tests produced no results, until about a month ago. We were performing a conductivity test, when something happened. The air around the sphere became a purplish-gray color. This excited alot of the staff. We immediately programmed our machines to apply electric and electromagnetic charges to a sphere at various power levels."
"These tests, however, had no major reactions. And as time passed, Professor Kai and I decided to play a game of Duel Monsters while the other scientists continued testing... to kill time. It was then the other scientists noticed that whenever one of us played a card, the spheres reacted."
"This discovery led the scientists to couple several of the spheres together to generate a larger field. The results surpassed our expectations. The holograms appeared to be real, surprisingly enough. Also, they seemed to be acting independently of the Duel Disks."
"Understanding the spheres reacted to Duel Monsters, we immediately constructed a duel arena powered by these spheres. The next step was to get real Duelists to test it. So Professor Kai put out flyers and... That's why you're all here."
The professor paused, allowing them to absorb the information.
"Wait a moment,", said Luke. "Did you say that you can increase the power of the spheres? That we weren't using the arena to its full power?"
"No, I said we are such fools that we could never go any further.", Winter snapped, shooting Luke a look that basically said 'Clean out your ears'. Luke clenched a fist, only to be held back a few fellow Duelists.
The Professor continued. "Different energy levels appear to alter some aspect of the game as well, but we're not sure what it is. Also, with the monsters being as realistic as they are, we don't know what will happen if a Duelist experiences a direct attack. Your condition at the end of the Duel still worries a good chuck of the staff, Zackarias. I don't know what happened, and I don't want any of you to get seriously hurt. I don't need another lawsuit on me"
"It was nothing!", Zack with a wide smirk.
"Good thing you feel that way,", replied the professor, "because we're not finished here. There are more tests that I'd like to perform today. That means I'll need two more volunteers."
Two Duelists then stepped forward.

The professor handed the Duelists two modified Duel Disks. They looked just like the last model of Duel Disk, the Academy Duel Disk. Instead of the typical blue spheres in their center, these had the gold spheres with eye symbols the professor had talked about in them. The Disks themselves also had gray highlights. "These special Duel Discs are capable of producing the same atmospheric effects as our Duel Arena,", Winter said. "The good news is that they're fully portable. The bad news is that these are still prototypes, and we do not have permission from KaibaCorp to distribute them. Also, we have a limited supply of the spheres, which means that quantities will remain low." "But there's no reason why you can't test them." the professor gave with a straight face. "In this Duel, each Duelist will have 4000 life points apiece, meaning that direct attacks are now allowed. However, I don't wish to see directs from Spell or Trap cards" "How come we gotta risk our necks testin' this thing?", the female Duelist complained, as if trying to get Winter to take her place. "You signed yourself up for this, did you not?", Winter replied without a care. "But if you're too scared to see a marvel of science, then feel free to leave with your attitude, but leave the Disk behind for the real Duelists." The girl clenched her fists. "FFF-Fine." "Relax.", the male Duelist said, "I'm sure the staff wouldn't let anything bad happen to us. I mean, come on." "Are you trying to say I'm scared!?", the girl snapped defensively. "I didn't say that, but okay.", the boy said. Winter sighed. These two were a match made in Heaven. And with that, the two were led to the Dueling Area. As the two left, every other Duelist sat around and chatted with one another. Luke? He seemed to wanna support the wall. And then he saw Zackarias spot him and start walking over. Strangely though, he didn't mind as much as he would've say, when the two first got there. "Say Skywalker.", Zack let out. "Don't call me that either.", Luke replied. "Yeah whatever. Anyway can I ask you a question?" "As long as it's not about my eye." "..." "Is it about my eye?" "...Sort of." "What's the question?" "What's with the eye." Luke sighed. Shoulda seen that coming. "It's a birth defect, okay? Now just drop it." "Oh okay.", Zackarias left it at that without a care. "So uh why do ya like that Fairy card so much?" Luke pulled the card from his Deck and stared at it. "Well if you must know. It belonged to my late girlfriend." "Late? What happened to her?" "She got sick, doctors couldn't do anything... Now would you just go? I don't like talking about it." "Eh, alright, I'll get to know some other people around here.", and with that, Zack waved with a smirk on his face, and walked off. Soon enough, the two Duelists from before had reached the Dueling Area. The scoreboard displayed their names, Wren and Denzi, and their life point counters at 4000. Winter had made a quick return to the viewing area, then turning on the speaker and, well, speaking to the two about to Duel. "You two may begin when you're ready."

Activating their Duel Disks, the golden spheres began to glow, this time more intensely. This time as the Duel started, the hazing gray around the area was darker, making viewing things a bit tougher. Both Duelists were shook up a bit, but quickly shrugged it off and began their Duel. "Ladies first.", Wren said, drawing her six cards as Denzi drew his five. She was already fed up, but atleast she'd be able to take off some steam on this guy. Glancing at her hand, she soon got her opening move in mind. "I'll start by activating Dimensional Fissure!" And just as Wren placed the card in her Duel Disk, a giant rift opened above the two, almost as if threatening to suck them both in. "So now any destroyed monsters are removed from play instead!", she explained. "And now I'll place this face-down.", and sure enough, an image of the face-down card formed from the fog. "I'll end by summoning Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer in attack mode." And appearing from a ghostly flame formed what looked like a monk with half a demon mask on. "About time.", Denzi commented, drawing his sixth card. "Hmm.". he thought. "Ah! I'll activate Swords of Concealing Light!" And like that, five swords of darkness dropped down from the dimensional rift and onto Wren's' side of the field. Her monster was then forced into face-down defense mode. "And now all of your monsters have to be that way for a couple turns.", he explained, as if mocking Wren. "So now I summon Armed Samurai - Ben Kei!" Even more weapons them dropped from the air, only this time on a space on Denzi's' field. And out of them crawled a warrior. Wren grunted at this. The monster wasn't strong enough to activate the trap she'd laid. "I'll end my turn with a face-down too.", Denzi was off to a good start. Wren drew. There went her plan. "I'll set a monster and lay another face-down. Just go.", she let out with a bit of disgust. Denzi happily drew his next card. "I'll start by flipping the card I laid last turn, Blast with Chain!", and out of thing air, Ben Kei grabbed what seemed like a few sticks of dynamite wrapped in a long chain. This raised his attack power to 1000. And looking at his hand, Denzi got an idea. "Now I summon Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke!" And just as said ninja formed, a hole opened up under him and swallowed him up. "I triggered my trap, Bottomless Trap Hole! So your monster got removed from play." Denzi just smirked and put the card in his pocket. It was no big deal since Sasuke wasn't really in his plan anyway. "Well alright. Anyway, thanks to Ben Kei's' effect, now he can attack both your monsters at once!" The Armed Samurai then launched his chain forward, destroying the Ghost Destroyer, then whipping it to the side of take out whatever Wren's' other monster was. And thanks to the rift, both were sucked up and removed from play. Wren didn't care... yet. "And now I'll play Reload." "So you're refreshing your hand, so what?", Wren commented. "Well yeah, if I was using it for me.", Denzi replied. "Huh?" "Let's see what happens when I try using it on my Samurai!" And like that, the Armed warrior's' eyes flared up, reeling his chain back, he launched it again--straight at Wren. As the chain nailed her across the face and her life point dropped to 3000, Wren held her cheek. That blow actually hurt a little... like it was real. And then the chain nailed her in the stomach, putting her down to 2000. "That'll do for me.", Denzi ended. Wren couldn't help but be a tiny bit impressed. Until now, she'd forgot all about the new system, that it could be manipulated differently than the normal game. If she wanted to win, she'd have to experiment a little.

Wren drew her next card. She wanted to save the card she'd laid for later, but... "I'll flip my trap, Karma Cut. So now that Armed Samurai gets removed from play!" And like that, Ben Kei was sucked into the dimension rift, gone. "And now I set a monster...", didn't matter that the Swords were still in effect this time. Unlike her other two this monster had good defense. Now to see if this card had changed like she thought it did. "I'll activate Soul Absorption!" The image of the card appeared on the field, and soon the souls of Ben Kei, Kycoo, and the Banisher of the Radiance descended from the rift, then going into Wren's' body, raising her life points to 3500. Yes! It'd worked, but wait... "There were more cards removed from play than that... what gives!?"" Denzi smiled a little when he came to the realization. "Spells and traps don't have souls." "Tch.", Wren let out. There went that plan. "I'll end my turn." Denzi drew, and the Swords of Concealing Light faded from the field. The guy wasn't too worried, he was still in the lead, afterall. Glancing at his hand, he realized he;d just drawn the perfect card. "I summon the Mystic Swordsman! Now he lets me destroy that monster of yours without worry!" Denzi pointed right at the face-down Wren and, and the Mystic Swordsman leaped from Denzi's' side of the field and cleaved the set card in two. The girl didn't even care that her Banisher of the Light was cleaved in twain, it was just another soul for her to absorb, raising her life points back to 4000. Weird, she just got this great feeling from absorbing souls. As though it was a real relaxation and empowerment every time. Denzi grunted a little at this. Long as she had that card in effect, her monsters could die with little worry. He'd need to think of a way to take it out later. But for now... "And now that my little guy has taken out a monster... He becomes a big guy!" And like that the Mystic Swordsman was enclosed in stone, only to soon break out as a whole new warrior. Oh hey, this could work. "And I'll end my turn with a face-down." Wren drew. Blah, this card wouldn't be any help since Soul Absorption only worked on monsters now. Oh well, might as well use it to raise her life points some. "I'll set a monster and end my turn." Now Denzi could act. "I flip my trap, Magic Jammer! So the price of the only card in my hand, that Dimension Fissure gets destroyed!", boy, how awkward that must've sounded. But it happened. A magic seal soon formed over the Fissure, sealing it up and causing it to fade. Wren clenched a fist. Now she couldn't absorb souls anymore! Well, for now atleast. "Just go." Denzi drew for his turn. "I'll start by layin' down a face-down. Now then my Swordsman, attack!" And it did, another card cleaved in two. This time the Different Dimension Crow. "So now my Mystic Swordsman gets to power up yet again!" This time, the Mystic seemed to simply shed some armor, and his energy blades grew longer and more fierce. But then wait... the crow still became a soul for Wren to absorb! Raising her life points to 4500! "What the... oh yeah the last Duel!", Denzi realized, having a flashback of when Luke's' Different Dimension Warrior was destroyed and smacking his forehead. Wren drew, a bit better since she absorbed a soul but still a bit upset. This guy was like her bane. Soon as she thought she got her advantage, it was snatched away. Not to mention now only Different Dimension monsters would heal her. She then looked at what she drew... hey, this would work. "I'll set a monster and a face-down. It's all I can do." Denzi drew with confidence, he was back in the game. Especially since it was a monster he drew. "I summon Mataza the Zapper!" Placing the monster on his Duel Disk, a samurai with black hair and green armor dropped down from the darkness. "Now Mystic Swordsman, destroy that card!" Wren smiled as her monster, Bazoo the Soul-Eater was sliced. "You triggered my trap card!" Denzi reacted, surprised." Wren continued, "It's Skull Lair! Now I get to absorb another soul!" And like that, Bazoo was absorbed, raising Wren's' life points to 5000. "And ontop of that, your Samurai is sent to the graveyard!" And simple as that, the green samurai exploded. Wren smirked as this happened. She'd saved herself for another turn. Now to continue this Duel... Meanwhile in the viewing room, Zackarias was all into this Duel. Strange, he was drawn to this sort of Dueling more than those of other types. Maybe he could get a closer look... And with that he snuck out the door and started running to the Dueling Area. Professor Kai saw him though, and went and stood next to Winter. "Should I stop him?" "No.", Winter replied plainly while jotting down some notes, "I'd like to see if something happens..."

"You're not the only one with a trap!", Denzi declared, taking Wren off guard. "I activate Call of the Haunted! So now Mataza comes back to life!" Without missing his cue, Mataza walked out of the lair that had risen from Wren's' trap. Now he was a Zombie who looked like he was out for revenge. Soon enough he returned to his spot on Denzi's' side of the field. Wren was -furious-. Her big moment had been snatched away from her so easily! Her thoughts of hurting her opponent were cut off when she heard the boy's' voice. "Now Zapper, attack!" The Zombie Samurai drew his blade and rushed right at Wren, slicing her across her body two times, lowering her life points to 2400. "Oh yeah, did I mention he can attack twice? Cause he can do that. Your move." With that, Wren forcefully drew her next card, smirking a tad evilly when she saw what it was. "I activate Chaos Greed!" The cards then flew out of her Disk for her to snatch. "AH-HA!", she declared. "Now I'll summon Gren Maju Da Eiza! A mighty red Fiend soon formed out of a cloud of the gray fog, once done, it roared to try and intimidate his opponents. Denzi however, like his monsters, just stared it down, waiting to see what Wren was going to do. "The idiot girl...", Winter commented, causing Kai to turn and question. "She just ended herself." It was also at this time that Zackarias had reached the Dueling Area to witness what was about to happen. "Now I play Soul Release, letting my monster grow to its full powe-", Wren cut herself off with a gasp, taking others a little by surprise as well. The girl's' body began to glow, a ghostly aura surrounding her. "What's happening to me...", and with a large cry of pain, the souls of all the monsters she'd absorbed was ripped from her body and absorbed by Gren Maju, causing her life points to drop to zero, and her body to become frozen and fall to the ground. Zack rushed up to her, knowing something was wrong. Wren had never felt this pain before. As though someone were trying to carve out her whole back. Zack nealed down and laid his hands on her to try and help somehow, but then the pain entered him as well, paralyzing him in place. "Professor! Shut down the Arena!", Denzi yelled up toward the viewing area. "Do it.", Professor Winter commanded, and so Kai did. "Come on, no time to waste.", Winter was oddly calm in this situation, then leading everyone down to the Dueling Area. Once the simulation had stopped, Zackarias fell back on his behind, and Wren slowly lifted herself from the floor. "Are you okay?", Denzi asked, now getting closer. "Oh yes, I'm sure after such a dramatic experience she's just peachy.", Winter commented. "Look everyone, we're done for the day. It's best you go home and think of what went on here today. If anyone here could take Wren home, great. If not, then just get out of here.", Kai then said. "No, I'm fine.", Wren let out, now on her feet. "I'm just really drained." "Because traveling while tired is just so smart isn't it?", Winter continued, "Kai, you take her. I'll stay here and make sure nothing was damaged. Now everyone, get out. We'll continue testing tomorrow." And like that, Duelists began pouring out. Zackarias stayed put though, now on his feet. Luke saw him, and for some reason felt compelled to ask, "Zack, are you coming?" "Huh?", the boy let out, having been snapped out of a daydream. "Uh, yeah, yeah. I'll be right there, go on ahead." Luke simply shrugged and walked off with his hands in his pockets. -A bit later- Winter sighed deeply and slouched into a chair. Today just turned out wonderful. Sure, he knew all along the testing could be dangerous, but still, now he'd need to think of a way to test these things fully and quickly. Lest he wanted some pending lawsuits. It was then Zackarias found his way into the office room, grinning. "What do you want? Here too... hang? As you kids say." Zackarias rolled his eyes playfully at the comment. "Well, I was actually here to give ya a suggestion." "Oh?" "Yeah, see. I was thinking you could hold a tournament! Then you could test all the levels, and anyone in the thing would be totally agreed on the terms." Winter thought this over, it just might work. "Alright. I'll have my workers send out letters with related information. Now get out of here, I want some peace." "Okay!", and with that, Zackarias ran out of the building toward his home. This was gonna be fun...

Winter had just sent the letters as Kai returned to the lab. The two Professors then talked over the new tournament, soon deciding on a name for the new Dueling Style, "Shadow Games". Thought it was fitting what with the effects and all. A bit later, Zackarias had just gotton home to see a package on his doorstep, from the lab. That was fast. Taking it inside and to his living room, he opened it to find three cards, a video tape, and and a DVD inside a small box. The other Duelists got the same package as well. Each one popping in either the tape or disk. The video started, and Professor Winter was on screen. "If you're watching this, don't watch the other one, it's the exact same thing.", he opened. "I recently got a very nice idea, allowing the lab to test all the levels of the spheres, and guaranteeing an amount of safety. We here at the testing lab have decided to have a tournament, starting tomorrow. Now before you even question what's in it for you, let me explain slowly so that you won't be bugging me with questions later." Winter took a break and continued. "Just think about it, the title of being master of a Dueling style noone else has used before. Which, by the way, we have recently called 'Shadow Games'. And if that's not enough, there's more. Inside the box you might've noticed 3 cards. Based on which one you present at registration, what you will get as a prize will be different." Winter then looked off screen and yelled, "STOP SCREWING AROUND BACK THERE." Clearing his throat, he continued. "If you present the card with the treasure on it, you will win $50,000 cash. If you present the card with the two Black Luster Soldiers on it, then you will receive copies of the rarest cards from each Duelist's' Decks that you defeated. And finally, if you present the card with a blank picture, you will receive a portable object from the lab. Be it a golden sphere, a custom Duel Disk, whatever. Lastly, if you wish to bring your own Duel Disk, fine. But it will have to be modified to work with a Gold Sphere. If not, you will be lent one of our prototype Duel Disks. If you don't wish to participate in the Shadow Games Tournament then forget this whole deal and never return to the testing facility again. Ever. Now, go over your Decks, prepare yourself for the new rules and get some rest. Good bye." And with that, the video has ended. Zackarias was psyched, Winter went through with his idea!He was gonna win this thing for sure. Wren was in. She wanted to pay back Denzi for her humiliating defeat from earlier today. Luke? He had nothing better to do. And for Denzi, figured it'd be fun, so he was in. All the Duelists in general now need to look over their Decks, needing to think outside the box on how they could manipulate the new system. It wasn't going to be an easy task, and they knew atleast four of the Duelists were tough. Needless to say, many had long nights.
