Since I've gotton caught up with (mostly) all of my other fics and whatnot, I thought I'd write this, as a thing to do when boredom hits. This is really just the intro, and so it's kinda short. Note: This fic takes place 10 years after YGO GX.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The poster seemed to stand out from the rest. "Experienced duelists requested for participation in a new study.” No other info was given, other than the time and place. Zacharias looked at the poster, considering participating. He was one of the few duelists in his town, and he thought that he was quite skilled. About ten years ago, someone like him would possibly been part of a Duelist Academy.
But, as time went on, more and more duelists started quitting, some because they were so bad, others because they kept winning, and some even just because they got bored of it. And, because of that, new games were made, the Academies were shut down, and even both Kaiba Corp and Industrial Illusions had forgotton about it sooner or later.
It was knowing this which made the poster interesting. Someone, and likely someone of influence, had shown an interest in Duel Monsters. Zach began to feel excited. He immediately decided to join, pulled a notebook out of his backpack, and jotted down the address and time. Just then, the class bell rang, he quickly put his notebook away and started running to his class.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wanna have one of your characters be a part of this? Well, simply PM me saying so, and of course giving info on the character, and I'll be sure to put em in somewhere or other. Well, tis all for nows.

Can you all guess who make their appearance in this part?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The day had finally come. Zacharias looked through his deck again, making sure that all of his cards were there. He was very proud of his deck, especially since it had held its own against many stronger opponents. Zach put the deck in his backpack with the rest of his collection. After a quick breakfast, he ran out his door towards the lab.
Zacharias arrived about ten to fifteen minutes early, and was directed to the lounge. There were already a few people there, and he sat down to wait. After asking the others what exactly this place was testing, one other person stated that they believed it to be a new dueling system. A few minutes later, a boy teen who looked about fifteen or sixteen years old sat down next to him.
“Hey, are you a duelist too?”, Zach asked to the boy.
The teen looked at Zacharias blankly, then replied, “No, I’m just here for the free food.” Seeing Zacharias's' confused look, the teen sighed, “Yes, I’m a duelist too. Isn’t everyone in here?”
“Oh…of course!” Zach laughed. “I guess I’m just a little excited. I read on a poster that they’re going to be testing some sort of new dueling system or something, and since I love dueling and everything related to dueling, I had to come! My name is Zacharias. What’s yours?”
“Davion." Davion replied, "A new dueling system?”
“Well, I don’t know any specifics, of course. I don’t know if it’s a new apparatus, or new rules, or new cards, or anything else. But I think it might revolutionize dueling! I can’t wait!”
Davion thought about it. Well, the game definitely needed a new hook. It wasn’t as popular as it used to be, and anything that brought in new players to compete against was alright in his book. It was then Davion realized that Zach was still talking.
“I have three different decks, one based on the XYZ cards, the second is a controlled burn, and the last is for power. I dunno why, but I sort of feel a connection with the cards I use. How do you design your deck?"
“From the heart.” Davion said. “Of course, picking cards that work well together, and that give you the best chance of winning isn't a bad thing either."
It was then that a door opened. The thought on almost every duelist in the rooms mind was, "Finnaly".
A professor entered the room and began to speak. “Hello everyone. My name is Professor Willard, and I’d like to welcome you all to my facility. I trust you all know the reason we are here. If not, let me explain. My colleagues and I have been doing some fascinating research on Duel Monsters technology. We have found a new way of dueling involving special atmospheric projectors. The experience is enhanced almost to the point of reality. I’ve done some preliminary studies, but the technology’s true potential has yet to be tested. I would like two volunteers to participate in a duel.”
Naturally, Zacharias’s' hand shot up first. “I’m ready! Pick me! I’m a great duelist!”
“Alright, we’ll take you, and, just for simplicity’s sake, the boy next to you,” smiled the professor.
Davion looked up, realized what the professor said, and quickly checked the other side of Zach. There was no one there. "Well, alright then", he thought.
“You two, follow me,” said Professor Willard. “My assistant, Professor Jackson, will lead the rest of you to the viewing area. You won’t want to miss this,” he finished with a smile. He turned to leave, and Davion and Zacharias quickly followed him.
As they walked down the hall, Professor Willard began explaining the game to the two duelists. “The layout and turn structure are the same as you remember: maximum hand size of six cards, no more than five monsters, and all that. Playing cards is also the same: one monster per turn, traps can’t be activated right away, and so on. The core of the game is the same.”
“So it’s simply a cosmetic change?”, asked Davion.
“Well, the appearance is drastically improved, yes. But there’s more to it than that. You know the text on the cards? All of the abilities? Forget most of them.”
“Forget them?” gasped Zach. “But if you take away the special abilities, there’s nothing left! Whoever has the strongest monsters wins!”
“Not so,” the professor replied, with one of his characteristic smiles. “I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but Duel Monsters has its roots in ancient Egypt. These monsters were once real, summoned by sorcerers to battle each other! Naturally, the creator of Duel Monsters wanted to give the players some sense of what this was like, so he simplified the monsters’ special powers and incorporated them into the game. Many of the cards, like Burst Stream of Destruction or Release Restraint, were already the abilities of their corresponding monster. Or, for another example, consider Skelengel. Its game text allows the player to draw a card, but in Egypt, there were no cards to draw! It’s very likely that the real Skelengel gave the user some sort of advantage, but what it was is unknown. However, we may have found a way to restore the game to what it was!”
“Real monsters? Not likely,” said Davion, “And now a game without rules? What kind of game would it be? I can hardly believe that someone would consider such a stupid thing. You may as well just have someone yell 'I win' first!" Davion exclaimed.
“Believe me, you’ll be glad you came,” replied the professor. “Here we are at the dueling arena. As I said, you’ll find the layout to be familiar. Take your positions, and let me know when you are ready. I’ll start up the projectors and say one or two more things, then you’re on your own.”
“Here we go!” exclaimed Zacharias. “This is going to be incredible!”
Davion growled a bit, “Alright, we might as well begin.” said Davion through clenched teeth as he shuffled his deck.

The lights went out, and several gold spheres in the corners of the room began to glow. Suddenly, the darkness was replaced with a sort of hazy gray. “It’s ready!” came the professor’s voice. “Since this is still in the experimental stages, we’ll go easy the first time. I’ll start you both off with 2000 life points, but I don’t want either of you to make a direct attack on each other. Stick with monster combat for now. Also, try different commands with your monsters. Trust your intuition to determine the card effects. Ready? Duel!”
"This is gonna to be tricky.", thought Devion. "I’m a practical duelist, not a theoretical one! I learn the rules and I use them. And now I have to make up the rules? Well, here goes nothing."
Zacharias drew six cards and looked over his hand. “I’ll summon Gigobyte!,” he said, placing the card onto his Duel Disk. There was a hissing sound from behind him, as his monster stepped out from the haze and onto the field.
Startled, Zach looked up from where the monster had emerged. Well, new cinematics were always welcome, he thought. “I’ll finish my turn by playing one card face down.”
“Sorry, Zacharias, but your monster is too weak for my Archfiend Soldier!” cried Davion, as he placed the card on his Duel Disk. “I’ll attack your little lizard!!”
“Bad move,” replied Zach. “I activate my Sakuretsu Armor trap card!” Immediately, a starge looking suit of armor equiped itself onto Gigobyte, and as the Archfiend attacked, the Soldier itself was destroyed.
“What?!”, exclaimed Davion, "That card's not an equip spell!"
“I know that!” yelled Zacharias. “What’s going on, Professor?”
“You called out Sakuretsu Armor,” the professor stated simply. “It formed.”
Davion blinked, trying to make sense of what he just saw.
“Wow!” said Zach. “This game is fantastic!"
"Now I want to try something!” Davion said, playing a card face down. “Your move!”
"You pretty much just told me that you played a trap.", Zacharias thought. “You shouldn’t have said that,” he told Davion. “But, since I can't attack you, you’re off the hook. I’ll end my turn.”
“Ah who cares!” said Davion as he drew. “And speaking of experimenting, I’d think I’ll try something. Come on out, Gene-Warped Warwolf!”
“Still can't harm Gigobyte...,”, teased Zach. “You’ll have to do better than that to beat me!”
“Oh, I will,” replied Davion. “I’ll also play my Axe of Despair card!”
“That still won’t work.”, Zacharias said, quite sure of himself.
“Is that so? Take a look at the field,” answered Davion.
Sure enough, something was happening. Long black streams started coming down on and swirling around Zach’s' monster. Slowly, The 'shadows' around the monster faded away, and out of them emerged what looked like a teenaged Gigobye. It had transformed in Gagagigo!
"So your plan was to make Gigobyte stronger?", Zacharias asked.
"Not gonna matter anyway,", Davion said, "Cause look, that Armor of his is long gone!"
And sure enough, Davion was right, while Gigobyte HAD gotton stronger, it came at the cost of the armor that was protecting it. Not only that, but Davion's' Wolf was still stronger as well!
“Warwolf, attack!” cried Davion.
Zach’s' monster was sliced in half from the force of the Gene-Warped Warwolf, leaving him with 1850 life points.
“I thought that might happen,” said Davion with a grin of satisfaction. “Normally, Axe of Despair would just increase the power of a monster, but, remembering the text on the Gigobyte card, saying it would one day become a warrior of darkness, or something like that, I was pretty sure the 'Despair' part of the Axe would be able to make that happen."
Zacharias mearly grinned at what he was hearing. This guy was changing the rules of Duel Monsters to gain an advantage! Things were defenetly gonna be interesting from here on out.
Zach knew that he would have to think on his feet to win this one. Nearly all of the effects he had learned had been totally re-vamped. The next draw could hold any number of outcomes, and none of them were ones he would have prepared for.

“Wake up! It’s your turn!”, came Davion’s voice.
Zacharias looked at him, then drew his next card. As he looked at his hand, he started thinking of a plan. Well, it certainly wasn’t a part of the rules, but if Axe of Despair had worked for Davion, maybe this would work for him.
Zach placed the card he just drew on his Duel Disk. “I summon Inpachi, in attack mode! Next, I play the magic card Tremendous Fire!”
The haze above them lightened, and Zacharias was sure that he could feel the room starting to warm up. Could Davian feel this too?
Zach looked across the field, and he soon heard a crackling sound, embers were on the ground, soon becoming bigger and bigger, turning into a blazing fire. A small bit of this fire burned Zacharias, lowering his life points to 1250, but more had burned Davion, lowering his to 1000.
And oddly, Davion’s face down card was now gone, and Zacharias was sure that the fire had burned it to ashes.
Wait. Something else was happening too. His Inpachi was now crackling, being burned alive! Zach smiled to himself, pleased that his gamble had paid off. “You threw me off a little last turn, but now it’s time to strike back!”, he called to Davion. “Blazing Inpachi! Attack his Gene-Warped Warwolf!”
The Wolf had been destroyed, and Davion’s' life points were reduced to 400.
“Hey, whoa!", Davion shouted. “Aren't Blazing Inpachi's' attack points only 1850!? How does that work!?”
“Normally, yes,”, Zacharias said. “But the fire was so great that Inpachi gained a few extra points.”
Davion drew a card and added it to his hand. He looked at the three cards in his hand a bit, probably hoping for some new card combination. But it seemed his search was in vain, because he simply said, “I’ll play Spirit of the Harp in defense mode. I can't do much else.”
Zach drew a card and smiled as he saw what it was, only to turn upside down when he looked at the field.
The flames on Blazing Inpachi started going out! Its attack power had down to a mear 100, while the defense point had rose greatly to 2100, Blazing Inpachi had become Charcoal Inpachi.
"Gah...I'll switch Inpachi to defense mode.", Zacharias said, "Now I play Monster Reincarnation!", Zach sent one card to the graveyard and added Gagagigo to his hand. "Now I'll summon Marauding Captain, which lets me special summon Gagagigo! Lastly, I'll set a face-down."
Davion looked surprised for a brief moment. “Still not enough to break my defense!”, he said.
“Don't matter,", replied Zacharias, "I've still got field control!", Zach then ended his turn.
“Not for long,”, Davion smiled as he drew his next card. “For now I play Double Summon! First to summon Master Kyonshee, then to sacrifice them both for Invader of Darkness!”
Zacharias started to worry. Davion's' monster was strong, strong enough to take out any of his monsters. Zach looked at the field, and it seemed as though Gagagigo was somehow reacting to the Invader of Darkness, he then got an idea.
“Now my Invader, attack the lizard!”
Immediately after Davion had given the order, Zacharias flipped a trap, Level Conversion Lab! Gagagigo's' body started being reconstructed, transforming it into Giga Gagagigo!
The new and improved Gagagigo held off the Invader of Darkness, tossing it back to Davion's' side of the field.
“Surprised?”, asked Zach. “Gagagigo just went under body reconstruction to fight that tremendous evil you call your monster!”
Davion stared, suprised, he could've won this turn had it not been for that one card!
“Ugh, I guess I'll end my turn with this face-down.", Davion mearly said.

Davion’s' mind was reeling. Zacharias had nearly three times as more life points than he did, and the monster Zach had just summoned was able to hold off the Invader of Darkness, however, he DID have a plan, and hoped that it would work.
Zacharias drew a card and put it into his hand. “I’ll switch my Captain into defense mode,” he said. “Your turn.”
Davion took his next card, then smiled. “You already know my next move. Invader, destroy his Captain!”
The Captain was no match for the mighty Invader, and thus, was destroyed, Davion ended his turn then.
Zach drew his next card. “I’ll pass, there's nothing I can do."
Davion drew his next card. "I'll attack your Inpachi now!"
Just like the Captain, Inpachi was no match, and after, Davion ended his turn.
Zacharias drew, then declared, “It’s time I end this. I play the Heavy Mech Support Unit! Raising my monster's' attack by 500 points! Now, attack that Invader!"
Davion smirked, "Not so fast! I flip over my Possession trap card!"
Right after the card was flipped, the soul of the Invader of Darkness came out of its own body and entered the body of Giga Gagagigo.
"What?", Zach asked in suprised.
"Yes, Possession! Thanks to this little card, yours monster is mine!", Davion announced. "But as a little side effect, my Invader becomes a mear Token."
The body of Davion's' Invader leaned forward a little, as if no life was in it, however...
Giga Gagagigo seemed to just stay still, no movement at all.
"Well, what're you waiting for? Get on over here!", commanded Davion.
The monster's' body was changing, as if both souls in it had been lost, the demonic monster was now, Gogiga Gagagigo!
Both Davion and Zacharias looked in amazement.
After a small pause, Zach said, "It seems your little trick didn't pay off, well, Gogiga Gagagigo, attack his Token!"
Davion couldn’t believe it. He had lost. He stared at his decreaing life point counter. Suddenly, just as it hit zero, he felt a sharp pain, as though someone was driving an icy knife into him. However, the pain stopped after a minute or two, and the lights went on and the haze lifted.
“What’s the matter?”, called Zacharias. “Losing wasn’t THAT hard on you, was it?”
Davion looked up, shaking his head. “It…it was nothing. Don’t worry about it.” As they stepped off the platform, he added, “Nice duel. You played well.”
“So did you,”, smiled Zach. “I guess it’s tricky playing with unwritten rules. But don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll both catch on really soon.”
"Yes", thought Davion. "I’ll be sure to master this game sooner or later."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry I didn't send this to you for proofreading first, Blazen, but I wanted to see if I could get Davion's' personality on my own for once, and if not, tell me and I'll edit.

Hurray for explanations!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Willard approached the duelists. "Great job, both of you!" he said. "You seem to be learning very quickly," he added with a smile.
Dr. Willard turned to Davion. "What happened at the end there? Did you get hurt?"
"I'm fine,", Davion replied. "Don't worry."
"It's my job to worry,", said the professor. "If my system is injuring duelists, I need to know why and how to prevent it!"
"Just what is your system, anyway?", asked Davion, "How does it work?"
"I wish I could tell you,", replied Dr. Willard. "But the truth is, I don't actually know how it works. No one does. Let's head back to the viewing area and I'll explain what we do know."
When Davion and Zacharias reached the viewing area, they were surrounded by the other excited duelists.
"Awesome duel!" "Nice move at the end there!" "That was incredible!" "Great combos, Davion!"
When the praise died down, Davion and Zach took their seats.
The professor walked to the front of the room and addressed the duelists. "Hello, everyone. You've just seen the amazing effects of our new dueling technology. Now I'd like to tell you the background of it.
"The golden spheres that you see are the key to all of this. They were found in the basement of a temple, and were given to us for study. The only distinguishing markings these sphere had were the eye-like symbols on them."
"We tried to take them apart, but to no avail. A chemical test showed that they are made of gold, which is even more confusing, since gold is a soft metal."
"We then decided to take other tests on them. The tests produced no results, until about a month ago. We were performing a conductivity test, when something happened. The air around the sphere became a purplish-gray color. This excited us very much. We immediately programmed our machines to apply electric and electromagnetic charges to a sphere at various power levels."
"These tests, however, had no major reactions. And as time passed, Professor Jackson and I decided to play a game of Duel Monsters while the other scientists continued testing. It was then the other scientists noticed that whenever one of us played a card, the spheres reacted!"
"This astounding discovery led the scientists to couple several of the spheres together to generate a larger field. The results surpassed our expectations. The holograms appeared to be real! Also, they seemed to be acting independently of the Duel Disks!"
"Understanding the spheres reacted to Duel Monsters, we immediately constructed a duel arena powered by these amazing spheres. The next step was to get real duelists to test it. That's why you're all here."
The professor paused, allowing them to absorb the information.
"Wait a moment,", said Davion. "Did you say that you can increase the power of the spheres? That we weren't using the arena to its full power?"
"Well, yes,", admitted the professor. "Different energy levels appear to alter some aspect of the game as well, but we're not sure what it is. Also, with the monsters being as real as they are, we don't know what will happen if a duelist experiences a direct attack. Your condition at the end of the duel still worries me, Davion. I don't know what happened, and I don't want any of you to get seriously hurt."
"It was nothing,", replied Davion.
"I'm glad you feel that way,", replied the professor, "because we're not finished here. There are more tests that I'd like to perform today. That means I'll need two more volunteers."
Two male duelists, both looking about 18 or 19 years of age, then stepped forward.
