The Outlands
Much of the wilderness on the continent of Valtheran consists of the vast, rugged savannah known as the Outlands. Large swathes of the Outlands are covered by tall, gold-brown grass that people can easily (and will) get lost in. Occasionally, between the plains of tall grass, there are large patches of ground devoid of any kind of vegetation, covered in dust blown about by the wind. Low-hanging trees can also be seen, lonesome among the Outlands, and are usually the only refuge from the sun overhead. In the distance, tall steppes can be seen, and throughout the Outlands, there are a number of small villages and towns, and even the camps of nomadic tribes. To the south, nestled against the cliff wall at the edge of the continent, hidden behind a pair of steppes making a narrow pathway, is one of the mystical Temples of Power, the Sea Temple that harbors the pathway to the Sunken City of Voya. In the very center of the Outlands is the ancient nesting grounds of the Dragon Tribes, where new generations of dragons are born.
The primary sentient races living in the outlands are Orcs and Humans, who mostly inhabit the villages. Despite the fearsome reputation of the Orcs, these villagers welcome travelers, and people can come and go as they please without having to fear for their lives. The real dangers, however, live out in the wilderness—Mutargatos, Wyverns, and dreaded packs of Velociraptors hide in the tall grass, waiting for unknowing prey to appear. Closer to the steppes, however, are giants and cyclopi, living in caves they hollowed out in the stone. These are the most dangerous things one can encounter out in the wilderness. Also on the steppes’ cliffsides are the nests of Kargarocs, which hunt out in the fields during the day. The nomadic tribes that inhabit the savannah can also be dangerous—they are wary of strangers and travelers, and will protect their herds of guar and netch fiercely if they feel they are threatened. Some tribes are more wary of strangers than others. They do, however, communicate with one another and with the other villages found in the Outlands, trading hides and other items for supplies they cannot produce themselves.
