While night slowly fell on Newdam, the residents hardly found themselves sleepy. The hustle and bustle of the city continued as evening fell, with lights illuminating the buildings, cars filling the streets, and people moving up and down the sidewalks as the sun cast a red-gold palor on the sea. The sounds of life permeated the air, symbolizing the human will to live despite the fact that everything here was virtual reality. But beneath the city streets was another matter entirely.
Two figures walked along the hidden tunnels of Newdam, their bright clothing and strange hair contrasting sharply with the dim shadows. One of them, a tall male, held a map in one hand, and an illuminating orb of magical light in the air over his other. The other, a young woman, looked about cautiously, keeping two arrows nocked on an elegant longbow.
"How much farther?" Liatas asked her companion, checking back down the hall.
"Hmm," Perrin mused, examining the map. It was one of the rare times they weren't trying to verbally rip off one another's heads. "It shouldn't be too much farther. We'll know it's the room when we see it."
"Good," Liatas said. A small creature skittered in the dim shadows ahead of them, and a sharp, wet squeal was heard as Liatas' arrows impaled it. The kicked the reptilian beast away with a booted foot as they passed.
"Do you think he'll keep up his end of the bargain?" Liatas asked, getting uncomfortable at the silence.
"He should," Perrin returned, looking down the darkened hall. "He seemed one to have integrity."
"Would a person knowing what we plan to do and allow it to happen have integrity at all?" Liatas mused, referring to their mission beneath the city. Perrin did not answer, as he was staring at the massive stone archway that they were coming up on.
The two of them entered an expansive cavern, with large cliffs overhead, towering above them. They quickly made their way to near the back of the cavern complex, to a large mound of stone almost like a half-cupped altar. Liatas pulled something from her bag and placed it in the center of the half-cup, and then the two Mirror-Mes quickly fled the room.
Upon the altar, the Black Sun labeled 003 Gamma became lit with a malevolent glow.
===Many Weeks Later===
Newdam had irrevocably changed, it seemed. The air was dank, the clouds heavy. The buildings were completely ruined. Streets filled with rubble, and no signs of life. No signs, if one did not count the ungodly creatures that a select few warriors were fighting to hold back.
They were in legions. They wore heavy gray armor, covering all of their bodies except for their heads, which were human skulls of a dead gray color. They wielded club-like weapons, and energy rifles. They moved like an army, and were relentless.
This dark army had surrounded the main government building in Newdam, a spire-like two-pronged skyscraper. Of the entire city, only it remained untouched. The rest of Newdam had been destroyed. A number of civilian NPCs and a handful of players were under seige here, and a strange field of energy surrounding the city prevented them from both contacting the outside gameworld, and from logging out to safety. They were trapped, through and through.
Thankfully, one of the players, a Beta Tester, had organized them into a defense, and had summoned another two Beta Testers to help. And for days, they had sat through this seige.
Rua skid back on his feet across the asphault, having blocked another energy beam from one of the Dark Soldiers. He growled and leapt back as another shot at him, and he fired a Disrupter shot into the group, blasting them all away. "This is insane!" he shouted as he readied his Phase Lance and flew back into the fray, "Kalmar, you okay!?"
